Hi, I'm a #HotGirl how about you?
At this point in the summer you cannot go anywhere or engage in anything “popular” without hearing about a Hot Girl and the Hot Girl/Boy Summer. This has been all over the culture; from Wendy's tweets, to Forever 21 ads, all the celebrity vacations, and the list goes on. This recent resurgence (because some of us were around when Cash Money was a thing) of the Hot Girl/Boy lingo can be attributed to the very talented, rising star from Houston, Ms. Megan Thee Stallion.
I am a rather chill wife in her early thirties who is also a mother and sister who pretty much keeps things together. I'm a bit antisocial, mostly because I have such a large family so to me my family members are all the people with whom I need to socialize. I’m definitely an introvert, but like an extrovert caught inside of an introvert (not that that makes any sense). I enjoy music and spending time making memories which is pretty much just experiencing life…all of that being said…I was introduced to Megan via the song “Big Ole Freak” on the radio one morning on my way to work. Then that led me to the rest of the Tina Snow mixtape and upon hearing “Hot Girl” then “Cocky AF”, I was hooked. Now my taste in music runs a full gamut from Gospel to Trap, then Alternative, Reggaeton, and so on. Many people judge me (incorrectly so) as a conservative, mild mannered, goody two shoes and that is fine with me. I mean I am conservative, not politically but socially, and I just really don’t do strangers. So this is where it all started for me. Other people were introduced to Megan by different means (my sister heard her on “Pole Dancer” with Wale and became a fan from there) but no matter the method her “Hot Girl Sh*t” has become sort of a movement and has infiltrated their lives.
In this “Real Hot Girl Sh*t” Megan Thee Stallion is really out here “driving the boat” and I am here for all of it. I mean my alcoholic adventures are behind me these days. Instead of some cognac I’ll do fine driving the boat with a nice crisp sangria but I’m down nonetheless. The movement touches all facets of the culture and is reflected even in Meg’s actions as well. I mean this “Hot Girl Shit" is in music, videos, on social media, etc. It's not just for any one person or type of person either. It's all inclusive, it's for girls, boys, others, old, young, etc. The beauty is that it is promoting positivity unlike past fads which were popular in the culture but at a negative cost.
There are so many different things about Megan that I admire which go beyond her craft. I appreciate that she is out here talking crazy, giving it back to men the same way they dish it out about women, and then spreading love throughout the industry. I like that she uses her platform for positivity and treats people respectfully. She is coming up in this business and is so far untouched by the drama which changes many people in the industry. In Meg’s Pull-Up episode with Joe Budden, she gave some insight into the many plans and other things she will do with her music and career. She is coming in the game with a pedigree and doesn’t see this as the end all and be all. This is a sign of the times for everybody in every career and stage of their lives. I mean our (millennials, maybe?) grandparents may have had the same career all of their lives, but our parents and we cannot even imagine being in one field for thirty plus years. Going into something knowing you will do this to your best level of excellence and use it to grow is what we should all try to do. Change is inevitable and one should want to be ready for it as it comes. The cocky image is something I think all female rappers have so that’s not new but she just adds her Houston seasoning on it and it makes for great anthems to which men and women can rock. The positivity Megan has brought to the industry just proves the saying, “you catch more bees with honey than with vinegar”. She shows love to people when she’s in their city, she fosters real friendships with other artists especially female artists and that is soooo lovely to witness. Of course, this makes for open avenues for collaborations, mentorships, and genuine relationships which people need at the most basic levels, not even thinking about in an industry as tough as the music industry. Greatest of all, as Megan learns she shares her growth with her #Hotties. She did a beach cleanup, she mentioned her growth when people tried to pull out old tweets, and she is forever growing-more leading by example.
The Hot Girl Summer, has meant something different to everybody and everybody has been out here becoming a part of the movement. The Hot Girl Summer is about doing your best, being your best, and getting above and beyond the stupidity and negativity. In these times I’m down with anything that is uplifting, empowering, and positive. As I said I’m in my thirties, a mother, a wife, and a hot girl. I’m out here putting aside my fears, stepping outside of my comfort zone, and trying new things. I’m sending the email laden with presumptuous language concerning a potential promotion, if I were a man it wouldn’t be a faux-pas so why not? I might catch a Zumba class, go out with only the husband one night (if we find a babysitter), pick up a hobby, and do what I need to take care of business. That’s the basis of my Hot Girl Summer.
This Movement is just that for me and everyone else. It is a place of escape for everyone to live their best lives and be their best selves. For me I pulled out some confidence and a bit of “not-giving-a-f*ck-at-all", of course all while still being a decent human to others and wishing the best to all. So, Thanks Meg for the #HotGirlSummer2019 and I can’t wait for midnight so I can hear the summer anthem.
I pray for strength, discernment, abundance, and anything else you deserve Megan Thee Stallion. This is your time and keep making your parents, friends, city, and yourself proud.
9/14/19 update - Megan Thee Stallion keeps on winning and showing up and showing out. Since this initial post, the "Hot Girl Summer" song was released, it featured Ty Dolla $ign and Nicki Minaj(definitely a hit and the video was cute), Meg has joined the Legendary Nights tour with Meek Mill and Future, and most importantly Meg has become a member of RocNation! So if leading by example is what Thee Stallion intends to keep doing, that means #HotGirlFall (for those of us who live where there are all four seasons) is on it's way too. The only way to go is up from here and any obstacle is really just a lesson.
